Civilian criminal law offences and military disciplinary offences may be tried in a Court Martial. A Court Martial trial, procedure and sentencing powers are broadly similar to those of the Crown Court.
Even if the alleged offence is suitable for a Summary Hearing, you have the absolute right to elect for the matter to be heard in a Court Martial rather than being heard by your Commanding Officer.
Sentences in the Court Martial in respect of criminal offences are the same as those passed in the Crown Court. Rulings of a Court Martial can be appealed to the Court Martial Appeal Court.
